Pre-Season ALL-STAR TEAM
 

OFFENSE

*QB Tyler Queen (North Cobb):  The 6-foot-3, 235-pound senior passed for 2,172 yards and 22

touchdowns and rushed for 434 yards and nine TDs last year for a team that went 9-3 and reached the second round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs. He had even better numbers as a sophomore, passing for 2,607 yards and rushing for 925 in leading the Warriors to the state semifinals. Queen is has committed to Auburn. He has been sidelined the summer after injuring the elbow in his throwing arm while pitching in a baseball game in March.

*RB Taj Griffin (McEachern):  The 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior rushed for 1,225 yards and nine touchdowns on 170 carries for a team that finished 11-3 and third in its region but reached the Class AAAAAA semifinals. He had one of the most memorable plays of the 2013 season, returning a punt 85 yards for the game-winning touchdown with a minute remaining in a 35-32 victory in the quarterfinals against Collins Hill. Griffin missed significant time last season while injured. Griffin committed to Oregon in April. With 4.35 speed in the 40, Griffin is one of Georgia’s fastest players.

*RB Mikell Lands-Davis (Alexander):  Lands-Davis was named first-team all-state in Class AAAA last season after leading the Cougars (8-5) to their most victories in 16 years and their first appearance in the state quarterfinals. The 6-foot, 210-pound senior rushed for 2,374 yards (7.68 yards per carry) and 28 touchdowns last season and had three games with more than 300 yards. He also caught 23 passes for 350 yards and three TDs and passed for two touchdowns. Lands-Davis committed to Georgia Tech in June.

*WR Jayson Stanley (Creekside):  The 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior was the leading receiver for a team that had a 2,500-yard passer (QB Felix Harper) and two backs with more than 1,300 yards rushing (Dexter Knox and Bricen Terry). He finished with 41 receptions for 817 yards and 16 touchdowns in helping the Seminoles to a 15-0 record and the first state championship in school history. Stanley had the longest scoring play from scrimmage, a 77-yard reception from Harper, in a wild 52-28 victory over Tucker in the Class AAAAA final. Georgia and Auburn are said to be his top schools.

*WR Preston Williams (Lovejoy):  Williams, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound senior, was named Class AAAAAA offensive player of the year after catching 56 passes for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns for a team that finished 10-2. He had one of the top individual performances of the 2013 season in a 27-23 victory over Marietta in the first round of the playoffs, catching seven passes for 275 yards and four touchdowns, including the game-winning 47-yard TD reception on the final play of the game. Scout and 247Sports rate Williams as a five-star recruit and the nation’s No. 1 receiver. He committed to Tennessee early in his junior season.

*TE Connor Redmond (Archer)   – Redmond caught 37 passes for 383 yards and six touchdowns and graded out at 91 percent as a blocker for the season on an 11-1 team. Redmond is committed to South Carolina.

*OL Mitch Hyatt (North Gwinnett):  The 6-foot-6, 275-pound senior is a five-star recruit who is considered one of the nation’s top offensive line prospects, ranked as the No. 1 tackle by Scout and the No. 2 tackle by Rivals and 247Sports. Hyatt was a first-team all-state selection in Class AAAAAA last season and was voted offensive lineman of the year by Gwinnett County coaches. He paved the way for an offense that averaged 229 yards passing and 142 yards rushing. North Gwinnett went 13-2 and lost to Norcross in the state final. Hyatt has offers from more than 15 BCS schools but has committed to Clemson, where his uncle (Dan Benish) played.

*OL Kaleb Kim (Mill Creek):  Kim, a 6-foot-4, 280-pound senior, is a four-star recruit who is rated among the nation’s top 30 offensive tackles, including a high of No. 14 by Rivals. He had an overall blocking grade of 88 percent for the season with 37 pancake blocks and led the way for an offense that averaged more than 420 yards and 40 points per game. Kim was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAAA last season. The Hawks finished 6-4 and were likely the best team in the state that failed to reach the playoffs. Kim committed to Auburn in April.

*OL Chuma Edoga (McEachern):  Edoga was the top offensive lineman on a McEachern team that had a 1,200-yard passer (QB Ty Clemons) and two 1,100-yard rushers (Clemons and RB Taj Griffin). The 6-foot-4, 285-pound senior is a five-star recruit. He graded at 90 percent with 35 pancake blocks last season and was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAAA. McEachern finished 11-3 and reached the state semifinals. Edoga committed to Southern Cal in April.

*OL Dallas Warmack (Mays):  The 6-foot-3, 290-pound senior graded at 83 percent with 31 pancake blocks and was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAA. Mays finished 8-4 (second place in powerful Region 6-AAAAA) and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs. Warmack committed before his junior season to Alabama, where his brother, former Westlake star Chance Warmack, was an All-America offensive lineman.

*OL Nick Wilson (Milton):  The 6-foot-3, 280-pound senior was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAAA after grading at 88 percent with 81 knockdowns and 37 pancake blocks and allowing no sacks on 126 passing plays. Milton finished 8-3 and lost to state runner-up North Gwinnett in the first round of the playoffs. Wilson committed to Stanford last month.

*OL/DL Javon Barnes (Stephenson):  Barnes, whose primary high school position is center, was named a first-team all-state lineman in Class AAAAA last season, although most of the recruiting services project him as a defensive tackle in college. The 6-foot-2, 290-pound senior graded 94 percent in 2013 with 41 pancake blocks and 15 “key blocks” that led to touchdowns for a Stephenson team that finished 9-3 and reached the second round of the playoffs. Barnes reportedly has an offer from Boston College and interest from about six other programs, primarily ACC schools.

*ATH Terry Godwin (Callaway):  The 6-foot, 165-pound senior was a first-team all-state receiver in Class AAA last season after catching 24 passes for 585 yards and nine touchdowns. He also had 38 tackles, five interceptions and three pass break-ups for a team that finished 12-2 and reached the state semifinals, losing to champion Buford 24-14 in what was the Wolves’ closest game of the season. He picked Georgia in June  over at least 13 other offers, primarily from SEC and ACC schools.

*PK/P Ian Shannon (Marietta):  Shannon, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound senior, was named the first-team all-state placekicker in Class AAAAAA last season, but he is also the nation’s No. 1 punter prospect in the Prokicker.com rankings. He made 16 of 18 field goals (the misses came from 47 and 58 yards) and 42 of 45 extra points, and 62 of his 73 kickoffs went for touchbacks. His longest field goal was a 49-yarder as time expired in a 24-21 victory against North Cobb, handing the Warriors their only region loss. He punted 37 times for a 40.7-yard average and allowed only 20 return yards all season. Marietta finished 8-3 and reached the first round of the playoffs. He has five reported offers, including one from Virginia.

DEFENSE

*DL Andrew Butcher (Alpharetta):  Butcher is a 6-foot-3, 240-pound senior was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAAA last season after recording 87 tackles, 16 tackles for losses, 11 sacks and two forced fumbles for a team that went 9-3, won its second region championship and reached the second round of the playoffs. Butcher has offers from about 15 BCS schools but committed to Tennessee the summer before his junior season.

*DL Natrez Patrick (Mays):  Patrick, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior, was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAA last season after recording 83 tackles, 27 tackles for losses, 17 sacks, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and three defensive touchdowns. Mays went 8-4 and reached the second round of the playoffs. Patrick committed to Georgia in April.

*DL Chauncey Rivers (Stephenson):  The 6-foot-3, 240-pound senior was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAA last season after recording 108 tackles, 29 tackles for losses and 15 sacks. Stephenson went 9-3 in 2013, reached the second round of the state playoffs and held eight of 12 opponents to seven points or less. Rivers committed to Georgia in February.

*DL D’Andre Walker (Hughes):  Walker became the first first-team all-state player in school history when he was named to the Class AAAAAA team last season. He was his region’s defensive player of the year. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior had 108 tackles (29 for losses), 21 sacks, seven forced fumbles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown for a team that finished 10-2 and recorded five shutouts. He has received about 25 scholarship offers, with strong interest from Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee, according to 247Sports.

*LB Montavious Atkinson (Hughes):  The 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior was named a first-team all-region linebacker in 3-AAAAAA last season after finishing with 137 tackles (74 solo), five tackles for losses, four forced fumbles and two interceptions for a team that recorded five shutouts. Hughes went 10-2 and reached the second round of the state playoffs. Atkinson committed to Auburn in March.

*LB/RB Joshua Thomas (Buford):  The 6-foot, 202-pound senior was named a first-team all-state linebacker in Class AAA last season. At running back, he rushed for 16 touchdowns and a team-high 1,046 yards last season. On defense, Thomas finished with 56 tackles, four tackles for losses, two sacks, four fumble recoveries and two defensive touchdowns for a Buford team that went 15-0 and won its ninth state championship in 13 years. He has offers from about 13 BCS schools including Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Ohio State.

*LB Quarte Sapp (Milton):  The 6-foot-2, 203-pound senior is ranked high as No. 10 nationally at his position by Rivals. He was named second-team all-state in Class AAAAAA last season by the Georgia Sports Writers Association and honorable mention by the AJC. In 2013, Sapp had 104 tackles (76 solo), 20 tackles for losses, two interceptions, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a touchdown on a fumble return. He has offers from about 15 BCS schools, with particular interest from Miami and Tennessee, according to 247Sports.

*LB Adonis Thomas (Central Gwinnett):  Thomas was a second-team all-county selection (Gwinnett Daily Post) last season despite missing two games with a hamstring pull. The 6-foot-4, 218-pound senior is a four-star recruit who is listed as the nation’s No. 10 outside linebacker in the 247Sports Composite rankings. Thomas finished the 2013 season with 56 tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles. He also had 10 receptions for 210 yards and four touchdowns on offense for a team that went 2-8 and missed the playoffs. He has close to 30 scholarship offers from BCS schools, with Alabama and Florida showing strong interest, according to 247Sports.

*DB Montrell Custis (Lovejoy):  The 6-foot, 175-pound senior was named second-team all-state in Class AAAAAA last season by the Georgia Sports Writers Association after finishing with 71 tackles, 25 pass break-ups, four interceptions, four blocked kicks and two defensive touchdowns. Lovejoy went 10-2 and reached the second round of the playoffs. His cousin, former Lovejoy star Travis Custis, was the Class AAAAAA offensive player of the year in 2012. Custis has committed to Alabama after originally pledging to Kentucky.

*DB Arrington Farrar (Woodward Academy):  The 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior was named a first-team all-state defensive back in Class AAA last season after finishing with 97 tackles, four pass break-ups, three interceptions, three tackles for losses, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick. Woodward Academy went 9-3 and reached the second round of the state playoffs. Farrar is a four-star recruit who is rated as the nation’s No. 27 outside linebacker by Scout, the No. 19 athlete by 247Sports, and the No. 14 safety by Rivals. He committed to Stanford just before his junior season.

*DB Yaquis “Duke” Shelley (Tucker):  The 5-foot-10, 170-pound senior was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAA last season after finishing with 44 tackles and six interceptions. He scored touchdowns on three interception returns, four kickoff returns and one punt return, and he scored three TDs on offense. Rivals considers him a four-star and ranks him No. 21 nationally at cornerback.. Reports that he had committed to Tennessee were labeled by Tigers coach Bryan Lamar as a “miscommunication,” and he is still weighing his offers.

*DB Aaron Williams (Carver-Atlanta):  Williams is a three-time all-region selection who was named first-team all-state in Class AAAA last season. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound senior finished with 90 tackles, five tackles for losses, three interceptions, 10 pass break-ups and three forced fumbles for a Carver team that went 7-4 and reached the first round of the state playoffs. Williams is committed to Nebraska.

*P Rodrigo Blankenship (Sprayberry):  The 6-foot-1, 182-pound senior was named the first-team all-state punter in Class AAAAA last season after averaging 42.5 yards on 38 kicks. His longest punt was 71 yards, and he put 14 inside the 20-yard line. Blankenship also made nine of 15 field goals (with a long of 52 yards), made all 28 of his extra-point attempts, and had touchbacks on 87 percent of his kickoffs. Sprayberry finished 2-8 and failed to make the playoffs. Blankenship has an offer from Alabama-Birmingham as well as interest from Cornell, Massachusetts and five SEC schools, according to 247Sports. Blankenship will be the East kicker for the U.S. Army All-American game in San Antonio in January.
